Protecting against phishing & spear-phishing attacks

Sep 8, 2020 | Newsletter, Advice, Resources

Phishing and spear-phishing attacks are on the rise, and remote working makes them more likely to be successful.

Make sure you know what they are, and how to protect yourself.

We’ve had direct experience of two (unsuccessful) spear-phishing attacks at EJC, one which would have cost us £2,000 and the other £34,400. We’ve also helped investigate sophisticated attacks against clients ranging from £10,000 all the way up to £500,000

An attack which compromises your business systems could be even costlier than those, both financially and to your reputation. There are plenty of businesses which have either gone under or suffered long-term damage as a result of these sorts of attacks.

In other words, it’s something to take very seriously indeed.

Attacks can be really hard to spot, so we’ve put together an in-depth guide to help you protect yourself and your business from ‘phishing’ (fairly generic attacks, e.g. a fake email to large numbers of people asking you to reset your password) and ‘spear phishing’ (a much more targeted attack, often impersonating a person you know).

It covers:

  • What phishing and spear-phishing is
  • How to spot attacks when you are targeted
  • Practical steps to take to avoid fraud
  • Protecting your email account

Let us know if you’d like to talk to us, in confidence, about anything you are concerned with.
