How to take a screenshot in Windows/Mac OS

Share a picture of your problem

There are times when things go wrong, especially when dealing with technology, and you wish the expert was there right when it happened. You may have received an alert on the screen that you can temporarily clear from the screen but you would like to give us word for word what it said. What can you do? Unfortunately, omnipresence is not always available in the IT industry. However, you can take a screenshot and share it with us.

How To Take a Screenshot in Windows
Capture the entire screen:

On your keyboard press 

This will capture the entire screen and keep it in your clipboard (invisibly) to paste into a separate application such as email or your choice of word processing software.

Note: The printscreen button may be abbreviated differently on your keyboard. However, it is usually found in the top right corner of your keyboard next to Scroll Lock (ScrLk) and Pause

Focused Screenshot:

If you would like to take a screenshot of a certain area on your screen or a certain dialog box/application window:

On your keyboard, hold and press

 

 

How To Take a Screenshot On a Mac
Capture the entire screen:

On your keyboard, hold and  and press 

This will take a screenshot of your entire screen and save it to the desktop as a file named similar to “Screen shot DATE at TIME.png”

Focused Screenshot:

If you would like to take a screenshot of a certain area on your screen or a certain dialog box/application window:

On your keyboard, hold and  and press 

Using this method you can draw a border, using your mouse, around the exact item that you would like to take a screenshot of. Another option is to click your spacebar after this key combination which would allow you to then click on the prompt or application window you would like to capture. Your screenshot will that be saved to the desktop as a file named similar to “Screen shot DATE at TIME.png”

Use Preview:

If you do not like using keyboard shortcuts or simply are unable to remember them you can also use the Preview application to do the same. Simply open the Preview application, click File and select from the options found under Take Screenshot, as shown below.
